Our Solar Panel Installation Journey

At Optimum Medical, sustainability isn’t an afterthought, it’s built into everything we do. That’s why we’re proud to have installed solar panels at our warehouse as part of our ongoing commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.

We knew we wanted to take more control over our energy usage and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and solar energy gives us the perfect opportunity to do just that. By generating our own clean electricity, we can power more of our operations with renewable energy, even on cloudy Yorkshire days!

What’s been installed?

We’ve fitted a rooftop solar panel system that feeds directly into our energy supply. It allows us to reduce the amount of electricity we draw from the grid, especially during daylight hours. It’s anticipated that the system will generate around 94,000 kWh of electricity per year. For context, that’s equivalent to 146% of the electricity used at our warehouse in 2024, and 77% of the total consumption across all Optimum Medical and Vyne sites. We’ll still need to draw energy from the grid when the sun isn’t shining, but this represents a huge reduction in our overall demand.

Overall, we estimate this will save over 21 tonnes of CO₂ every year.

The impact so far

The solar panels are already helping us reduce our grid energy consumption, and we’re monitoring their performance closely through smart metering. So far (even though we have only had the winter period) they have already generated 27,400 kWh energy, 85% of which has been used on site with the other 15% contributing to help the grid be greener!

This is just one part of our ongoing journey to operate more sustainably. Combined with our electric and hybrid company vehicles, LED lighting, and green energy tariffs, it all contributes to a greener Optimum Medical.
