Driving Change: The Shift to Hybrid Company Cars

When we talk about sustainability at Optimum Medical, it’s not just about what happens inside our buildings—it’s also about how we move around.

One of the changes we’re particularly proud of is our decision to switch our company car fleet over to hybrid vehicles. It’s another step towards lowering our emissions, reducing fuel consumption, and making more responsible choices for the planet.

Why hybrid?

Hybrid cars offer a lower-emission alternative to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. They’re a great middle ground—reducing fuel usage and emissions while still offering the range and flexibility we need for business travel and site visits.

How far have we come?

In 2024, our new hybrid company vehicles helped our team travel 56,840 miles. Add to that 17,400 miles completed by our electric vehicle while delivering 5,761 customer orders, and we’ve saved a total of 9.77 tonnes of CO₂. That’s the equivalent of running a typical NHS operating theatre 24 hours a day for 39 days!

How many have we switched?

All of our company owned vehicles have been replaced with hybrid models. We’re also encouraging staff to consider hybrid or electric cars through our benefits and car schemes.

It’s not just the cars…

To support our hybrid (and future electric) fleet, we’ve installed EV chargers at both our sites—and yes, staff can charge their vehicles for free while at work! Our local delivery van, purchased in 2023, is also fully electric, replacing the previous Diesel model. It’s another small way we’re helping everyone make greener choices.

Together with our solar panels and other ESG initiatives, the hybrid car rollout reflects our commitment to reducing our environmental impact, one mile at a time.
